Today was a great day! We (the interns) went into work at the normal time, but at 2 we got to leave and go on a "field trip" to Marie Claire - the magazine. Marie Claire and mark. are working on advertising together...so one of mark.'s interns (Ashlee) is actually working at the Marie Claire office, so our intern coordinator planned a trip for us to come see their office!

What made it even better was that since it's a part of the Hearst Corporation (along with 15 other mags and dozens of other publications), so we got to actually go to the Hearst Tower! If you haven't heard if it before, it's known as one of the most "green" buildings today...I'll share some facts later :o)

So we left work at 2, walked over to the Hearst Tower, and went up to Marie Claire on level 34. We first had a presentation about the advertising side of MC. Then we had a speaker (the VP) talk about the editorial side. Both are full of different aspects, but were so interesting to learn about. Marketing for a magazine sounds really interesting after this visit :o)

After the presentations, we then got an hour tour of the whole building! That's what the pictures are from, and with each picture I'll explain some of the "green" facts.

All in all, today was a blast and it really opened my eyes to more opportunities and options for future jobs. I haven't ever bought Marie Claire, but after our visit and learning about how the whole company works, I am definitely a fan and will vouch that they are a great company!

Enjoy the pictures :o)

This is from the ground level looking up a glass water fall. This is "green" because:
1) the glass is made of recycled bottles
2) the water runs by a computer, so it pulsates the stream level to save energy
3) the water that runs down is from rainwater that's collected on the roof
4) the whole waterfall cools this huge area/lobby, so they don't use much air which saves money

Me in front of the same waterfall/escalator view

Going up the escalator, looking down on the ground level

Some of us going up!

This is the main floor - where the cafe and elevators are

Some of us on the elevator, going up to Marie Claire!

This is back at the main floor because we just got done with the presentations, then came back down for the building tour

These steel columns are everywhere - inside and out...and the whole buildng has 90% recycled steel!

This painting is called Riverlines, and it's made of just mud and water. The artist wanted to stay "green" but decided to contrast with the industrial/clean look and made something like nature

This view is a peek of Central Park, from the gym level! The building has their own gym for everyone to use. The actual flooring that the machines and weights are on, are "floating" so that the noises can't be heard from the floors below

Then we went to the Good Housekeeping level. This is their Research Institute, where employees are literally paid to test products. They had rooms with washer and dryers, kitchens, clothes, anything you can think of!

Still on the GH level, this is a list of products that were being tested

A display kitchen for showing tested products

These products were tested and chosen as "healthiest convenience foods"

More of Central Park!

This is the main kitchen of GH where products are tested

This is the original Good Housekeeping dining room

and the original living room

This is a room that tests vacuum cleaners

Then we went to the level where all the conference rooms are. The windows all have shades on them (for saving energy) but the shades slide away when the view wants to be seen

And this is the view people are paid to see when they have conferences :o) what a life...

This is another view of a shade that's sliding away

This is a tennis court that was on top of a building

The Hudson River

This is our whole group of mark. interns, plus the mark./Marie Claire intern, plus our intern coordinator...on the far left

And this is another conference room

Leaving the Hearst Tower :o(

The Hearst Tower was amazing, and I'm serious when I say to go if you ever get the chance!!

Love and miss everyone,
Taylor

Also, if everyone would please pray for one of my closest friend's, Julie. Her grandma, Nana, has been diagnosed with cancer and her whole family and Nana needs as many prayers as possible.

  1. Tay - What an amazing day for you all! I'm sure you know how rare that opportunity was. Can't even imagine what it's like working in that building and atmosphere. You are taking some great pictures, by the way - AND, you look fantastic! You look healthy, happy & rested; all things a girl's mom wants! I love & miss you! (P.S. JULIE, if you are reading this, please know that we are keeping your sweet Nana in our prayers. Give your mom a hug and tell her we are thinking of you all.~Robbin)
